With Just 3 Ingredients!
Jump to RecipeFall is here. And when I think of fall, I think of pumpkins, spice and everything nice!
I used to love burning pumpkin spice candles. And I used to have fall scented air fresheners in various rooms of my home. But after learning about all of the toxins in most candles and commercial air fresheners, I decided to just make my own room spray!
Why make your own room spray?
Many commercial air fresheners are currently made using carcinogens, volatile organic compounds and known toxins such as phthalate esters, in their formulas. They often contain hormone-disrupting chemicals that can aggravate asthma, provoke allergies, affect reproductive development and may pose a particular health risk to babies and young children.
Being a mother of four children, I just couldn’t risk bringing those toxins into my home. By making my own room spray, I know that none of the bad stuff is present. Not only is this recipe all natural and free of toxins, carcinogens and hormone-disrupting chemicals, it is really easy to make.
What is in this Pumpkin Spice Room Spray?
My recipe includes only the following 3 ingredients:
- Essential Oils (Cinnamon Bark, Nutmeg, Ginger, Clove, Sweet Orange, Cardamom)
- Vodka
- Water, filtered or distilled
Essential Oils
I always use 100% therapeutic grade essential oils. Although there are several brands on the market (doTERRA, Healing Solutions, Plant Therapy & Young Living), I really love the Edens Garden Brand.
Edens (i.e. Effective, Dedicated, Educated, Natural and Safe) Garden is a Non-Multi-Level Marketing (Non-MLM) company, which helps them keep their prices down. They source their oils from farms around the globe, where the plants yielding essential oils are growing in their natural habitat. Their oils are free of synthetics and smell really good!
Not only do the oils in this blend smell great, but there are also several health benefits associated with them.
1. Cinnamon Bark oil
This oil has a sweet, spicy and woodsy scent that warms the spirit and helps
2. Nutmeg oil
Nutmeg oil also has a spicy and woodsy scent. Historically, it has been used to treat digestive problems and has been shown to have antibacterial properties. It has also been shown to be relaxing, can enhance concentration and is a great detoxification agent.
3. Ginger oil
Ginger oil has a potent spicy, warm and woodsy scent that promotes self-confidence and courage. It is most well-known for its ability to alleviate nausea and migraines. It is very high in antioxidants and can boost the immune system. In addition, its anti-inflammatory properties enhance proper digestion and absorption of food, while soothing the respiratory system.
4. Clove oil
Clove oil is another spicy scented oil. It has antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties and has been historically used to treat digestive problems. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can help relieve pain and increase blood circulation.
5. Citrus Oils
Citrus Oils, in general, have a very uplifting scent. Orange Oil, specifically,(whether Blood Orange, Sweet Orange or Wild Orange, Mandarin, Clementine or Tangerine) has a happy scent. This group of oils has a high d-limonene content, making them great antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral agents. The properties of these orange oils are basically the same. They are all energizing, purifying and help promote a healthy immune system.
6. Cardamom oil
Cardamom oil is a sweet, spicy and strong smelling scent that is good for relieving anger and frustration. It is a close relative to ginger and has been historically used to aid digestion, clear infections and
Overall, the blend of these oils will create a warm and spicy aroma that also has many antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory qualities. This is especially great to have around at this time of year, as the weather starts to get chillier and sickness starts to creep in!
Alcohol, The Key Ingredient
I have chosen to include Vodka in this recipe. Without the addition of alcohol, the essential oils mixed with water do not smell as good and the scent doesn’t last as long. The ethanol in grain vodka combines the oil and water together to create one unit, which causes the scent of the oils to be stronger and hang on the air much longer. If you don’t want to use a grain alcohol, you might be able to substitute rubbing alcohol or witch hazel. However, I have not tried this.
Note that a natural room spray will never smell quite like the store bought artificial air fresheners. However, if made well, it will bring a nice scent to any room, free of toxic fumes and chemicals.
How should you store your room spray?
You should always store natural room sprays in amber, cobalt blue or green glass spray bottles to protect the essential oils from damaging light. It is also important that glass bottles are used. If essential oils are placed in plastic bottles, they will leach the toxic plastic chemicals into the spray blend, which will defeat the purpose of making your own naturally healthy room spray. However, if stored properly, the natural room spray should last for months.
You can store this pumpkin spice room spray blend just about anywhere in your home. I keep a bottle in my bathroom, as well as my kitchen. But it would also be great to have a bottle in the bedroom and can double as a linen spray. However or wherever you choose to use it, I hope it brings the scent of fall into your home!
