Homemade Pumpkin Spice Mix

With Just 3 Ingredients!

Jump to Recipe

It’s hard not to think about pumpkin spice during the fall.  It seems to be everywhere at this time of year!  Everyone is selling pumpkin spice flavored drinks and sweets.  I love the taste of this spice blend, but I don’t love the cost or the health implications of buying all of the flavored drinks or sweets for sale!

So, like most other things, I stick to what I can make at home.  That way I, not only save some currency, but can also make those drinks and sweets in a healthier manner.

What Is In This Pumpkin Spice Mix?

My recipe includes only the following 3 ingredients:

Of course, you could just go to the store and buy a jar of pumpkin spice mix.  But if you are like me, you don’t always have a jar in your cabinet.  And then you find yourself needing a teaspoon for a recipe and then what do you do?  Well, you whip up a batch yourself.  Because you probably have all of these ingredients in your spice cabinet, already.

What’s more appealing, is that it is actually much cheaper to combine your own spices.  The worst case scenario is that you buy separate jars of each of these ingredients, which would still save you $3 per spice mix.  But you could save even more currency by buying organic herbs in bulk, saving you on the cost of the jars.  I buy bags of various spices from my natural grocery store for a fraction of the cost of buying individual spice jars!

I choose to use only cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger in my spice mix.  However, many mixes also include ground cloves or allspice.  I don’t really care for the taste of cloves, much, so I leave this spice out of my mix. (This is another good reason to make your own!)  And I didn’t have any allspice on hand.

If you would like to add either of these spices to the mix, you can certainly do so.  I would only add approximately 1 or 2 tablespoons of each.  The general rule of thumb is that half of the recipe should consist of equal parts of nutmeg, ginger, cloves and allspice.  The other half of the recipe should consist of cinnamon.

What Do I Do With This Pumpkin Spice Mix?

During the fall season, I tend to use this spice mix a lot!  Here are a few ways I use it.

  • Pies – Add 2 teaspoons to your pumpkin or pecan pie filling.
  • Pumpkin Spice Latte – Sprinkle ½ teaspoon of this mix in your coffee or chai tea, along with some melted butter and cream, to create a pumpkin spice latte.
  • Casseroles – Add 1 teaspoon to a Sweet Potato Casserole for added flavor.
  • Pancakes – Add 1 teaspoon to spice up your Pecan Pie Pancakes
  • Bread – Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to your favorite pumpkin bread recipe.
  • Cookies – Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to your favorite fall cookie recipe.

How Should This Spice Mix Be Stored?

I store my spice mix in a re-purposed spice jar.  Another option is to store your mix in a 4 ounce mason jar with an air tight seal.  Spices should be stored in a cool dark place away from heat.  They should last for at least 1 year before the spices starts to lose flavor, but will probably be good for 2 or even 3 years.

After seeing how easy and inexpensive it is to make your own pumpkin spice mix, you might never buy another jar of pumpkin spice from the store again!  I know I haven’t in years.
