How to Make Dill Seasoning

This dill seasoning recipe is one of many seasoning mixes I have made over the years.  It is a relatively new one for me.  The more I cook, the more I look for ways to make my time in the kitchen more efficient.  And making my own spice mixes saves me so much time.  My premade spice mixes are usually less expensive to make and are always healthier than those purchased in the store.

What’s In This Dill Seasoning?

My recipe includes the following 6 ingredients:

Dried Herbs

You can purchase spice jars of each seasoning, but it will save you money to buy refill bags of organic dried herbs at your local natural grocery store.  You can buy a 1 ounce bag for a fraction of the cost of a spice jar, since part of the cost of the spice jar is the jar!  I just refill my jars when I empty them from the refill bags I’ve purchased. 

I store any unused spice portions in a cool, dark place, which is generally in a box in my pantry.  Just don’t forget to label the spice jars or bags with the date you opened them, as spices start to lose their flavor and potency shortly after they have been opened for one year.      

Dried Dill vs. Fresh Dill

Consider making this seasoning mix without the dried dill weed and use fresh dill weed, instead.  I often freeze fresh dill when the herbs are in season in 1 ounce bags.  When I am ready to make a batch of dill dip or use this seasoning for some other recipe, I will just defrost a bag, slightly, chop up the herbs and toss them in my recipe creation.   

Dill Weed Substitute

Fresh fennel fronds are also a great substitute for fresh dill weed.  We often have lots of fennel and don’t know what to do with it!  Most people only use the fennel bulb and throw the rest out.  I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to do that.  Not only is it wasteful, fronds are delicious and you are missing out! 

You can use fennel in the same way you would use dill weed. You can also freeze the fronds in 1 ounce bags just like the fresh dill, if you have lots of it.   

If you do choose to use 1 ounce of fresh dill weed or fennel fronds, you will need to adjust your spice mix for your recipe.  The dried dill accounts for half of the original dried recipe mix.  Therefore, if the recipe calls for 3 tablespoons of dried dill seasoning, use only 1 ½ tablespoons of dried dill seasoning (without the dill or fennel) and add the 1 ounce of fresh dill or fennel to your recipe. 

What Can You Use Dill Seasoning For?

I generally use this dill seasoning for making a Creamy Dill Dip and to season fish.  However, you could get creative with it and use it to make other new creations, such as adding it to a casserole, shrimp or even to spice up your eggs or veggies. 

How Should I Store My Seasoning Mix?

I store my mixes in 8 to 10 ounce jars with an air tight seal.  I often re-purposed old glass spice jars.  If I don’t have one available, I’ll use a mason jar.  I always use glass jars, though, since plastic can leach into your spice mix.  Part of the reason I make my own spice mixes is to reduce the unknown chemicals and additives in my food!

Store your spices in a cool, dark place away from heat.  The pre-made mix will last for at least 1 year, before it starts to lose its flavor.  However, it will probably be good for 2 or even 3 years. 

Start making your own seasoning mixes.  Not only will you not have to worry about preservatives and other mystery ingredients being added in to the mix, but you won’t have to run out to the store because you forgot to buy a seasoning packet!  It’ll always be right there in your cabinet.

  • Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Stir well to combine. Store in an airtight mason jar for up to one year.
