How to Make Italian Seasoning

This Italian seasoning recipe was the first of many seasoning mixes I have made over the years.  Making my own mix was a necessity since I have a love affair with Italian food. I am part Sicilian and probably use Italian seasoning in a recipe I make at least once a week!  So purchasing a pre-made mix became very costly.  

What’s in it?

After trial and error, I found this mix that agreed with my palate.  It includes only the following 5 ingredients:

That’s it!  You probably already have all of these ingredients in your spice cabinet.  I have started buying these herbs, as well as others, in bulk, since I use them all the time.  I, then, pre-make my own seasoning and put the mix in an 8 to 10 ounce jar with air tight seal.  They stack nicely in my spice cabinet and are handy when I need them.  

I always buy organically grown herbs.  I will try to buy them from my natural neighborhood grocery store first.  However, Amazon and Mountain Rose Herbs also have wonderful options if you cannot buy them locally.   

What do I use Italian Seasoning for?

Honestly, it’s difficult for me to not find new ways to incorporate this Italian seasoning into my recipes!  I use it all of the time. Here are a few ways I use it.

  • Red Sauce – Add 1 Tbsp of seasoning to 12 ounces of red sauce, whether it be pizza, tomato, or marinara.
  • Meat – Sprinkle 1 Tbsp of seasoning on 1 pound of chicken, pork chops, salmon, or shrimp.  I have also added it to my ground beef and made hamburgers with it. Delicious! 
  • Pizza – Add 1 Tbsp of this seasoning to your pizza crust recipe.  You can also sprinkle it on top of the pizza.
  • Eggs – You can add this to your scrambled or fried eggs.  I like to add it to my egg casseroles and skillets, also.
  • Vegetables – This seasoning will taste great on any kind of vegetables, whether they be baked, roasted, grilled, fried or steamed.  Just add some butter and yum!

How should I store my seasoning mix?

As I said above, I put my mix in an 8 to 10 ounce jar with air tight seal.  This is either a re-purposed old glass spice jar or a mason jar.  However, I am always trying to re-use old jars. I just don’t see the point in wasting good glass!    

I store my spices in a cool dark place away from heat.  This is usually a kitchen cabinet where the jar will be handy when I’m cooking.  Although the mix will last for at least 1 year before it starts to lose flavor, it will be good for 2 or even 3 years.  However, it probably won’t last you that long! I tend to make a fresh batch of this mix every 2 or 3 months. 

Once you’ve made your own Italian seasoning mix, you’ll never want to buy another container of pre-made mix again!  In fact, you’ll start looking at the other spice combinations in your spice cabinet and wonder if there is a better tasting and better for you homemade version you could make.  Being homemade means you know exactly what is in that mix. You don’t have to worry about preservatives and other mystery ingredients being added in. And it’s so easy to make. So get started and make your mix today!

Ingredients
  

  • ¼ Cup Dried Basil
  • ¼ Cup Dried Oregano
  • ¼ Cup Dried Parsley
  • ¼ Cup Garlic Powder
  • 2 Tbsp Himalayan Pink Salt

Instructions
 

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Stir well to combine. Store in an airtight mason jar for up to one year. Shake well before using, as seasonings can settle.
